Bringing a dog or cat to Chile

Moderate: no titer or quarantine, but the timing is tight. The official certificate is valid only 10 days (up to 5 more), parasite treatment must fall 5-30 days before the certificate, and since 27 July 2026 a microchip or tattoo is mandatory.

Which rules apply to you

Chile sorts arriving pets by where they travel from. Find your group, then follow its steps.

Step by step

  1. Microchip or tattoo the pet

Since 27 Jul 2026 every dog and cat needs permanent ID: an ISO 11784/11785 microchip or a tattoo. The number on the certificate must match the animal.

  2. Vaccinate against rabies

A first vaccine must be given at least 21 days before entry. For boosters, the certificate must list the last two doses.

  3. Treat for parasites 5-30 days before the CVI

Give a broad-spectrum internal and external parasite treatment between 5 and 30 days before the certificate's issue date. Treating too close to the certificate date is a common mistake.

  4. Vet exam and official CVI

A vet examines the pet within 10 days before the CVI. The origin country's official authority issues the CVI. It is valid for 10 days, extendable by up to 5 days in some cases.

  5. Declare the pet on arrival

Declare the animal on the SAG/customs sworn declaration (Declaración Jurada) and show the CVI or EU passport to SAG at the border.

No routine quarantine. Non-compliant pets can be refused entry or have other SAG measures applied.

What we could not confirm

  • The 27 Jul 2026 effective date for mandatory microchip/tattoo comes from a news source. The SAG page states the requirement but no date.
  • Whether puppies/kittens under 3 months (or pets from rabies-free countries) are exempt from rabies vaccination was not confirmed. The SAG page implies all primo-vaccinated animals of any age need 21 days.
  • No pet number limit was found.
