Bringing a dog or cat to Indonesia
A hard destination. Every pet needs an Agriculture Ministry import permit, a rabies titer of at least 0.5 IU/ml, 6 months' residence in the origin country, advance notice to Barantin and roughly 14 days' quarantine on arrival (usually in Jakarta). Bali has kept a provincial closure on bringing in dogs, cats and other rabies-carrier animals since 2008.
Which rules apply to you
Indonesia sorts arriving pets by where they travel from. Find your group, then follow its steps.
| Arriving from | Titer test | Wait after sample | Permit | Quarantine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All countriesSame rules for all origins. The origin country must not have an ongoing rabies outbreak, and the pet's home area must have had no rabies reported in the last 6 months. | Yes | — | Yes | 14+ days |
Step by step
Check residency and age
The pet must have lived in the origin country for 6+ months and be at least 3 months old. No rabies may have been reported in its home area in the last 6 months.
Vaccinate and titer test
Vaccinate against rabies with an inactivated (killed) vaccine, then get a rabies antibody result of >=0.5 IU/ml from a recognised lab.
Get the import permit
Apply for the Ministry of Agriculture import permit before travel. Per Australia's DAFF, it is valid for 1 month from issue.
Notify Barantin
Register in Barantin's system (SSM-QC / PTK Online) and submit the mandatory prior notice at notice.karantinaindonesia.go.id at least 3 days before arrival.
Health certificate
The official vet examines the pet within 5 days before departure and confirms it shows no signs of rabies or contagious disease. The government vet authority issues or endorses the certificate.
Quarantine on arrival
Hand over the pet and documents to quarantine at the entry point and expect about 14 days' isolation.
14 days at the government quarantine station on arrival at Soekarno-Hatta (Danish Embassy). Barantin says the pet may be isolated and observed and is released with a Quarantine Release Certificate. If disease is found or documents are incomplete, the pet faces longer quarantine, refusal or return.
Good to know
- Cats
- Same as dogs: titer, permit, 6-month residency and quarantine all apply to cats.
- How many pets
- Not specified
- Parasite treatment
- Not specified in official sources found
- Arrival
- Designated entry points only; Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) is the main one for pets from abroad. Bali (Denpasar) is effectively closed to dogs/cats from abroad under Bali Governor Regulation 88/2008. Moving a pet from another Indonesian island to Bali requires a separate domestic quarantine process and Bali's own rules.
- Bali: Governor Regulation (Pergub) No. 88/2008 temporarily closes entry of rabies-carrier animals (dogs, cats, monkeys) into Bali. In Oct 2025 the Bali agriculture service still listed it among its regulations.
- Emotional support dogs: Barantin says to apply through the All Indonesia arrival app.
- Customs (Bea Cukai) gives live animals rush handling once quarantine is cleared.
What we could not confirm
- I found no current Barantin or Ditjen PKH document with exact timings (vaccine-to-titer interval, titer validity, quarantine length). The 14-day quarantine and 5-day exam window come from a 2016 Danish Embassy page and Australia's DAFF. MICoR's dog page was blocked, so only the cat page was read.
- Whether Bali Pergub 88/2008 still bans ALL dog/cat imports, including from abroad via Jakarta, is not confirmed. A Barantin Bali article describes international procedures but does not mention the ban.
- Whether a microchip is mandatory is not confirmed on an official source; pet agents say yes (ISO).
- Some agents report imports are allowed only from rabies-free countries; I could not confirm this on an official source.
- Lead time and how to apply for the import permit (provincial recommendation then national) come only from secondary sources.
