Bringing a dog or cat from the Netherlands to Chile

Under Chile's rules, pets from the Netherlands are in the group “All countries”. A dog from the Netherlands needs a microchip, a rabies vaccine and an official health certificate. There is no quarantine if every rule is met. There is no long waiting period, so a few weeks of preparation is usually enough.

About Chile: Moderate: no titer or quarantine, but the timing is tight. The official certificate is valid only 10 days (up to 5 more), parasite treatment must fall 5-30 days before the certificate, and since 27 July 2026 a microchip or tattoo is mandatory.

No long wait: A first rabies vaccine must be given at least 21 days before entry. Pets that are not on their first vaccine must have their last two doses certified, or they are treated as first-vaccinated.

Step by step

  1. Microchip or tattoo the pet

Since 27 Jul 2026 every dog and cat needs permanent ID: an ISO 11784/11785 microchip or a tattoo. The number on the certificate must match the animal.

  2. Vaccinate against rabies

A first vaccine must be given at least 21 days before entry. For boosters, the certificate must list the last two doses.

  3. Treat for parasites 5-30 days before the CVI

Give a broad-spectrum internal and external parasite treatment between 5 and 30 days before the certificate's issue date. Treating too close to the certificate date is a common mistake.

  4. Vet exam and official CVI

A vet examines the pet within 10 days before the CVI. The origin country's official authority issues the CVI. It is valid for 10 days, extendable by up to 5 days in some cases.

  5. Declare the pet on arrival

Declare the animal on the SAG/customs sworn declaration (Declaración Jurada) and show the CVI or EU passport to SAG at the border.

No routine quarantine. Non-compliant pets can be refused entry or have other SAG measures applied.
