How pet travel paperwork works

Most countries use the same building blocks in the same order. What changes is how long each wait is and whether a permit or quarantine is added.

  1. MicrochipAn ISO 11784/11785 chip, implanted before any rabies vaccine that you want to count.
  2. Rabies vaccineUsually from 12 weeks of age. Some countries want two doses.
  3. Titer testA blood test, at least 30 days after vaccination, proving the vaccine worked.
  4. The waitStrict countries make you wait after the blood sample: from 28 days up to 180.
  5. Certificate and permitAn official vet signs a health certificate days before the flight. Some countries also need a permit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to move a dog or cat abroad?

Between a few weeks and about seven months. Countries with no blood test only need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccine and a health certificate. Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the UK (from some origins) require a rabies titer test and a waiting period of up to 180 days after the blood sample.

What is a rabies titer test?

A blood test (FAVN or RFFIT) that proves the rabies vaccine worked. The sample is usually taken at least 30 days after vaccination and sent to an approved laboratory. Many countries then make you wait a set number of days after the sample before the pet can arrive.

Does my pet need a microchip?

Almost every country requires an ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccine that you want to count. If the chip is implanted after the vaccine, the vaccine usually has to be repeated.

Is there quarantine for pets?

Most countries have no quarantine if every rule is met. Australia, New Zealand and some others always require quarantine for pets from most countries, and many countries quarantine pets that arrive with missing paperwork.

Can I take my pet in the cabin?

That is set by the airline, not by the destination country. Small dogs and cats in an approved soft carrier can often fly in the cabin, but some countries (for example the UK and Australia) only accept pets as cargo or checked baggage on approved routes.
